The CIPP Congratulates McGill’s Performance at the Harold G. Fox Moot.

The Center for Intellectual Property Policy (CIPP) is proud to congratulate the McGill Faculty of Law Harold G. Fox Moot Team for their excellent performance in Toronto earlier this year.

The team (Appellants: Valmi DuFour-Lussier, Qian Hui Sun; Respondents: Ava Liaghati, Mitchel Fleming) competed against twelve other teams from across Canada in Toronto. The Appellants made McGill history by securing the university’s first award in the competition since its inception, winning second-place for Best Appellants’ Factum. The team was mentored by Claudette van Zyl and Sofia Lopez Bancalari, two lawyers at Norton Rose Fulbright in Montreal.

“The Fox Moot provides an exceptional experience for students hoping to gain insight into the practice of intellectual property, while having the opportunity to meet future colleagues currently in Canada’s various faculties of law, as well as professors and both former and sitting judges of the Federal Court and Federal Court of Appeal” stated van Zyl.

The team has high hopes for the future of the McGill Harold G. Fox moot team.

“I am of the opinion that McGill truly fosters an environment that gets students interested in the field of intellectual property” said Fleming, “Any student that has the desire for advocacy will find themselves well-positioned to pursue opportunities in this field.”

All team members have a demonstrated an interest in both fields of litigation and intellectual property and hope to have long careers in their fields of interest. All participants believe that this opportunity provided for critical insight into their future careers paths and hope to employ their experiences in future cases.

The CIPP looks forward to having next year’s team take up the torch and represent their school at the 2021 Harold G. Fox moot. Moot tryouts are underway in the coming months, with a formal selection occurring by the end of summer.
